May 9, 2008
I'm going to be 53 years old this December. I have yet to earn enough money in my years to qualify for social security. The administration always sends me a printout reminding me what a crap loser I really am.

I have a associate degree in accounting, but never was able to get a job with a decent company. I worked for an embezzaler, a drug pusher/user, some use-um/give-raises/cut-hours-um/then-get-a-cheaper-worker joints, even a Pakistani Al Quada cell (whom I reported to the FBI after 911.) It always amazed me that these yucky people could make the salary that they did, while me?---a decent, hard worker, always on time, always tried---just couldn't make anything more than squat with no benefits.

I filled my time volunteering at church, hours and hours. I copyrighted several musical works and even free lanced an article for a national magazine. Mostly, I raised my children while my husband brought the paycheck home for the family. I'm always called upon by everyone to do this or do that for them for free. I'm pretty smart and can accomplish most anything I try. My nephew recently dumped a rocking chair on my doorstep for me to reupholster. I've put weeks of effort into the project. It's turning out as if a professional had done it....but alas, no income will come from it.

My life has been wasted always being someone else's slave and always "trying to find a niche" that would make me some money, but the money never came.
I guess my comment is:
It is better to do absolutely nothing at all and stare out a window, than work hard for absolutely no personal profit. Websites are another "fake." You'll never earn enough with them either.

Why don't you tell the REAL truth and stop tempting people into believing they'll get someplace with this? Stick with your lawyer job, sue the pants off people for big bucks, and then when you get to be 53 years old, you'll have the respect of everyone around you because you'll be maxing out the social security limits.
You won't be considered a loser crap because your efforts were fortunately rewarded with$$$$$$$$

I used to be an office manager for a litigation firm. I cannot tell you how many attorneys I knew who got burned out rather quickly, and decided to change their careers altogether.

Very nice story. I almost went to law school after finishing my degree in EECS because I worked in a patent division of Johnson & Johnson for a bit. Then when it came time to write the personal statements i realized that I had nothing to say. That's when I realized I really didn't want to be a lawyer. I'm glad I became an engineer now.

Amazing post - it was like reading my story (except a few years ahead of me). I was an economics major, and went to law school right after - passed the NY Bar on the first shot and only did litigation for about 6 months before I knew I HAD to get out.

Currently, I work at an amazing Fee Based Financial Planning Firm (as their Director of Financial Planning). Everyday I get to help planners prepare for clients on issues ranging from Federal Estate Tax Planning to protecting their children's money from equitable distribution.

I get out of work between 530 and 6 and get paid more than my litigation firm where I was reprimanded for leaving early (at 7pm!).

It should be noted, that like you, I don't regret going to law school. Without it, I would not be in the position I am today.

Looks like you've found a great solution for your needs. Since I've got degrees in English, I've always toyed with the idea of law school. Your post has some interesting insights!

Mrs. Micah,

Yes, I highly appreciate jobs that have a start and end time. Work is important, but it's not everything in life!

Ken,

What type of places do you speak at? That sounds like a very interesting side gig.

I do the same thing with public speaking... it's a solid wage that gives me a lot of flexibility on when it comes to writing.

Because I speak on what I also write about, it also serves to keep me sharp!

That sounds very cool. I can understand why contract legal work appeals to you. I kind of like that sort of work too...even if it's mind-numbing at times, it has a definite end both at 5pm and at the end of the contract.
