Your post caught my eye today as my son and I spent the afternoon browsing our local library and came home with 11 books and 2 videos.
Since I just started on this road to become debt-free I didn't have many financial books in my own personal library. I looked at the Suze Orman books in our local 'Half Price Bookstore' but decided to give the library a look before I spent the money. They had what I was looking for!
One tip for parents with kids who don't like to stand as you browse the titles-
log in to the internet and set your kiddo up on a child friendly site (my son loves www.treehousetv.com) and you're good for a few minutes of uninterrupted browsing. My library is small but has lots of computers so I just moved him around the library with me as I looked for books. Of course your kiddo has to be old enough to do this and trustworthy enough to sit still for a few minutes but it sure beats the "Are you done yet?I want to go to the kids section." whine every 30 seconds.

They also have library book sales ! they say their unwanted books, plus donations. You can always find a wide variety of books pretty cheap (your local university, if any, will probably do the same)

Another service that's offered at my local library is help doing your taxes. I think the AARP does it. I wouldn't do it if I had really complicated taxes, but if your taxes are pretty straightforward and simple, it's nice to have another set of eyes making sure you're not doing anything completely wrong.
On a related but funny note. . when I was 16 my first job was at the library's circ desk, and a lady asked me for help doing her taxes. . . we had the forms there, shouldn't I be able to help? Lady, I've never even filed my OWN taxes before! I sure don't know what forms you need to file if you own a small business!

In our library you can download movies and books to your home computer with your library card. We love the library and use it all the time. We usually have 100-200 books, movies, cds rotating in and out of our house. My favorite library feature is that we reserve books from our home computer, they email me when they arrive, and I stop by and pick them up. It's great!

Great post. I've never thought of the language learning facility, it's one of the skills I've wanted to acheive this year. Totally relate to the Da Vinci Code experience, I believe I have The Devil Wears Prada tucked away somewhere.

Love Love Love the libraries. So many great things especially for those with kids.
I also rarely read fiction a second time, but non-fiction I do like to buy. The library is a great source for cheap used books. Look for their book sale. Most books at our library go for fifty cents!

I've just recently re-discovered the library. They really are up to date with technology now. I had a book that was due but I wasn't done with it. Did I go back to the library and re-check it? No, I went online and renewed! You can also request books online and set up wish lists too. I don't know if these are true all over but at least in NY it is.
I'll have to look into the language tapes (cd's I hope).
