I’ve worked in hospitality / customer service most of my life. I know what’s going on in the mind of someone behind the counter or over the phone. My intention is to be one of, or maybe the only, bright part of their day.

Senior citizen rate? Wow, that was very nice of her. I agree with you – in my last job, whenever I was greeted by a friendly customer, I wanted to do something more for that person. People naturally do gravitate towards those who are happy and friendly. Offering a smile, a compliment, striking up a friendly conversation – these are all subtle ways to encourage and uplift a person’s spirit. So it makes me feel good to be nice back to them as a way to repay them for their thoughtful gesture.

Cheerful, but firm and confident is the key! If I giggled and acted silly all the time no one would take me seriously. Might work for girls but if I did that I think people would think I was being nutty.

I try to always answer the phone cheerfully at work, I’m also cheerful when making outgoing calls. I’ll be so chipper asking people to remove late charges or taking down tenant complaints. I like to think it helps, though I’m not positive.
