Ya'll suck (I don't mean that in a hateful way). I thought I knew what I wanted and now after reading this blog I am all kinds of confused! This bad night vision everyone is talking about.... like I'm just a little unsure about all that. I use only contacts right now. They are the 4 week kind. I'm pretty sure on a consistent basis I have problems with lights at night. And the moon is never very clear; it's always hazy. Well, I might need to get a new prescription, but as far back as I can remember lights have never looked right since wearing contacts or corrective lenses. I'm just saying, is this halo effect like worse than what I am currently experiencing with my contacts? I mean I don't know how to describe what I see other than to say lights just have like a star or laser effect, does that make any sense? I hate trying to describe vision, just look through my eyes for a second, what do you think? That would be nice. Anyway, I was planning on using my insurance because I have been told by my provider that they will give me discounts and set me up with a surgeon. I have a little money on an FSA, and I just got in a car accident (not my fault by the way), so I was like, "Hmmm, use the money to fix my car which has a 1000,000 thousand miles on it and other dents because I live in Phoenix, AZ where hit and runs are an epidemic, or use the money to help pay for Lasik surgery and excel at my career. I'm a photographer, yeah can't really be having halos on lights and shit considering my business is all about capturing light at its best intensity and perfect measurement. It's just that after a long shoot and staring through that camera my eyes get tired and dry. I can't schedule as many sessions in one day as I would like because my eyes just can't take it, and glasses are just too cumbersome. I thought this surgery could really help my career and make me better at what I do, but if I ruin my ability to perceive objects and subjects correctly through my camera, my chances at being something in this business are totally shot. I'll be like Beethoven who went deaf! Is there any sort of insurance you can purchase before this procedure? I mean I'm pretty willing to go blind in at least one eye for a million dollars perhaps? I'll just hire digital photography students to take the pictures and I'll just be the creative genius! I'll wear a patch and I'll carry a cane for effect, and yes I will be wearing a crocheted poncho!

I need someone to give me some good advice. I’ve been looking around on the internet; I've talked with my doctor. He said I would be a perfect candidate for the surgery after I turned 25. He said my eyes are healthy, no stigmatism. I'm only like a -3 in the left and -2.75 in the right. As far as fluctuation goes, maybe .25 a year or every other year. Like I said, the doc said that should stop after 25, but I just turned 25 in December. I might wait to make my decision after actually talking with the surgeon and just see if I feel comfortable. I get that sixth sense thing (not seeing dead people) Anyway, if I feel a bad feeling I just won't do it. That's my policy when I shop lift, I've never been caught, except that one time when I was totally stoned and was stupid enough to think they wouldn't put a sensor on a bottle of vodka, I'm totally kidding, no I'm not. Anyway, any comments positive or slanderous are welcome, always been a big believer in free speech so say whatever. Oh, and Katie, I just want you to know that I copied and pasted this entire comment in Word just so I could spell check it. I don't want you thinking I'm not a creditable source, now I really am joking. However, I spell amazingly well at 1:00 in the morning. Thank you all.

For the record, my surgery was completed on 1/18/10 with one of the top surgery centers in AZ (Barnet-Dulaney) and with their top Dr. Rivera.

I recently had my one-month post-op with my surgeon and I can say that my vision is now much better compared to how it was during the 2nd week (when I posted my complaint on here). My Dr. states it will get much better with time and could take 6-9 mos for the halos to go away. He explains that the halo and brightness effect is a result of the brain trying to get accustomed to the new "vision system" and will eventually learn to block it out. As for my blurry right eye, he will recommend that I get a little fine tune with Lasik and explains that it's the astigmatism that prevented the perfect results that were achieved in my left (it has no astigmatism). The fine tune is all included in my initial surgery cost. My vision is 20/10 in the left and 20/30 in the right. I have to wait 90 days to begin the Lasik process, I will keep everyone posted on the results.

One thing I want to clear up is that I am now much, much happier with my eyes since the halo effect has greatly diminished. I think one just needs to be patient with the results and you won't be dissapointed. If you have a high Rx and don't have astigmatism, the ICL should work perfectly for you!

Anyone have surgery in the NY area? I am 26 and debating the surgery. Been wearing glasses since I was four years old, contacts since I was 16-17. I can't do anything without them. My son is going to be two and I couldn't even get up in the night and make him a bottle without glasses/contacts. I am doing all the research and have friends who have had it done by reputable doctors, but the more information the better, so if anyone here has done this in ny or nj, I would love to hear from you.

Katie, hope to be 26, but I started to study English then. Now almost retired. Correction was done in my right eye by one doctor having very good reputation and vision is quite good now in my right eye. Starburts still remain, not so bad though.

Too old at 26, Lux? No, that's the ideal age. Your vision typically stabilizes by mid-20s, and you don't have to think about losing close vision for quite a while.

I'm sorry you've had a bad experience. Is it possible to find another doctor to correct the problems?

Daniel, I know from my brother's experience that Lasik speeds up the need for reading glasses, by a few years.

Anyway, I remain on the fence. My eyesight is -10, and I'm fine with contacts and glasses, as long as I'm not traveling to places with bad air pollution, or camping, or...

Hi Katie,

Couldn't agree more.

I had mine done in UK with Optical Express, part from the dry eye during the first few months my vision was, and has been since, excellent. I get the occasional Halo at night around bright car headlights, but had those with glasses.

I found the after care with Optical Express really good also, continued to go back for check ups (regarding the dry eye) for months after the intial surgery. (no extra cost of course).

No reading glasses for me yet, but I'm in my mid-thirties, so shouldn't need them for another 10 or so years.

Cheers

Katie, sorry that I have not so good English as I started to study it, when I was 26. My country, Finland has otherwise very high medical standards. I have read much more negative lasik results in US as in Europe. However, I also believe I was too old to undergo this procedure. Neither I met anyone else, who has had bad results. But this does not comfort me at all. I can see now almost as well as did with my old glasses, but starburts around car lights are very annoying. In my country the price of this is quite fixed, over 3000 €, which is roughly usd 4000.

And frankly, many of those here who are posting negative experiences--the English is not good, so that makes me think that either you're getting in done by the factory-line eye doctors or in dodgy countries.

For those who post horror stories, it would be really helpful if you stated WHEN you had the procedure done and by WHOM.

I know there are a lot of shoddy practitioners out there who don't know what they're doing--but in "real life" I know far more people who have been very happy with their results. They all paid top dollar for it too.

Karina,

today is the annual day of my worst decision. Maybe I need "bitter drink". Though slow improvement occurs, I still see starburst around the most bright car lights and halos around others. Also, when getting elder, you miss your near sight, when doing some accurate hobby, like electronics, what I do. So, do not undergo this unsafe procedure.

Joel,

Sorry to hear about the problems you are having. Of course, I am not a doctor, but one thing I would highly recommend you ask your doctor about and try out would be using some Alphagen P drops. If you take it just before nightfall and give them about 30 minutes or so, they could reduce your night vision problems. I take it sometimes and it works really good. I don't always have the problem though and it is mostly just halos at night when I do have any issues. As far as double vision goes, that could be some of the astigmatism I think from the one eye. I never had what I considered "double vision" per se, but I could get my eyes to do something like that mostly before the lasik I think (hard to remember all the details now).

As far as the Alphagen P goes, it is prescption and can cost some $, but maybe the doctor will give you some of his as well - it wouldn't hurt to ask. I really would recommend trying it at least if your doctor says it's OK. It just seems to make things sharper at night and I think will improve the night driving quite a bit - then hopefully later on some of the issues might get better on their own and/or after the lasik.

The more I read other people's experiences the more I think are glasses and contact lenses really that bad?? After all at least you can be assured that when wearing either your vision will be good.

I had my ICL surgery completed on 1/18/10 and felt it was the greatest investment in myself up until a week ago when night driving got scary! I don't know how to describe the issue, it seems like a combination of halos, starlights and double vision. One thing is for sure, I'm really annoyed with it. ICL surgery was sold to me as HD for my eyes which only set itself up for a huge downfall. In addition to my night vision troubles, I too can relate to Jim's slight astigmatism in one eye (right) which has left me with slightly blurry in one eye and 20/20 or better in the other. I have a pending appt. with my Dr. next week to talk about the option to fine tuen with Lasik as Jim described, I really hope this gets better soon. In the meantime, steer clear of my way at night!

Just had Lasik jan 8, 2010. I was told I see 20/30 a week after surgery. But frustrated that I see fuzzy/blurry... Was told this is part of healing process. Anyone have feedback on post-lasik fuzzy/blurriness and how long til it subsides completely?

Hi Jenni,

I had Lasik back in Sept 08.

My vision was pretty much clear after the first day, the dry eye lasted a good few months and is uncomfortable.

I didn't really do enough research before I had my eyes done, but luckily I did not have any problems (bar the dry eye).

I would recommend researching thoroughly before making any decisions.

Do the army have a stance on eye surgery ?

Best
