I recently joined Stash Hotel Rewards, a relatively new program. They only work with independent (non-chain) hotels. I like them because they have a good mix of hotels: business hotels I can stay at for work without getting funny looks from the boss, and beautiful resorts I'm planning to spend my points at. They give five points per dollar, and prices to redeem free nights seem better than the chains. I signed up when they were giving away 500 points to sign up; not sure if that deal's still going on.

I also travel extensively for work, sometimes I'm on the road for 2-3 weeks per month. The best program that works for me is definitely the Marriot Rewards, Priority Club Reward and LQ Rewards...from time to time I will stay at Choice Hotels, however I am not a huge fan. You get great benefits also with Red Roof if you're just considering to stop for the night, after a few stays you get a certificate for a free one night stand, however, with me not being home all the time I just seem to miss the deadline on those :) Find what's best for you and what fits your budget or purpose. Good Luck!

I am a member of all of these reward programs as I travel weekly on business. From my experiences all over the US, the best hotels for business travelers are through Priority Club, Marriott, Starwood, Hilton and Choice Privileges. I usually stay at higher end hotels but sometimes you end up in a place where they aren't available. These programs have hotels in every financial bracket and that comes in handy when you're in the middle of nowhere!

You will not be able count any reward points or or stays on your Holiday Inn etc "Priority Club" rewards card. I lost the benefit of 11 day stay because I booked through Travelocity.

Watch out for Choice Hotels, their points expire!!! In november of 2008 I fineally got enough points for 1 night stay in an upgraded place. Well, I didn't realize that the bonus points are good for less than 2 years and regular points are good for less than 4. (They expire at the end of the year) So on December 31st my balance went from 12,XXX to 4XXX. With points set to expire in Dec 09 there is no way I will ever get enough points for a free room. Sorry Choice Hotels, You just lost a loyal customer who stayed with you for every family road trip for the last 3 years. I guess if you only stay with them 2-3 times a year they are not interested in rewarding you for being loyal.
