In my opinion, you ought to buy a home as soon as you can. Make a decision and get the best deal you can and move on. Buying a home (especially in the DC area) is almost always a good investment over the long term. I also think you ought to be at least 50% in stocks. When you retire you will probably look back and see that stocks now are really low. By avoiding them as you are, you are following the herd and in my opinion that is not the way to make money. I too am a lawyer. I understand that people don't like unsolicited advice so you'll find your own path. I don't often offer unsolicited advice for that reason but in this case I really think you should seriously consider another path. Whatever you do, good luck! It's your money and your life :).

Don't you think you're being a bit too pessimistic and doomish about the economy? I mean it's bad, but it can't possibly be this bad can it? Obama the savior will bail us out right? :)
I'm hoping the 2009 economic stimulus plan will get a follow up package to incorporate some type of stimulus checks to help poor souls like myself. Things are not as dire as you suggest, but we can definitely use the financial help!
