Giftcards are a lousy gift! Cash is not any better, as they require no thought or effort. I would rather receive a 25 cent candy bar than a $5 giftcard. Giftcards really only serve the merchant, as the merchant gets to use the money until the giftcard is redeemed.

Cash generally is a more convenient and useful gift; however, I appreciate giftcards more. If someone gives me a check, I stick it in my savings. If someone gives me a gift card, I'm forced to find something I think I'll enjoy to spend it on.
What would you think of a savings bond as a wedding present? I've got two dear friends who're getting married this spring, and they've been living together for some time so they likely have the essential household items taken care of.
