Speeding tickets are absolutely terrible and should be banned forever. There are countless ways to put others at risk without speeding, that are not fined at all - making a lane change when there's not enough room, merging onto the highway to aggressively, etc, etc. Heck, driving itself, is an act that puts others at risk. Someone who drives 20k miles per year is putting other motorists and himself at 5 times greater risk then someone who drives 4k miles per year but this behavior is not fined, punished or even discouraged. In fact, its actually encouraged - our taxes pay for a portion of everyone's gas bill ( through oil subsidies ). That's right, every dollar you earn is indirectly contributing to putting other people at risk.
Speeding tickets are an outrageous way to make money and putting people in jail for safe driving is just stupid.

Yes you're absolutely correct. I was so focused on the subsequent financial hurt from the speeding violation that I neglected the most obvious lesson - slowing down can save your life and the lives of others!

Wow - these are stiff penalties but i bet they save lives. I used to speed a lot until I had a nasty shock on the motorway. Nowadays I always remind myself that late is better than never.
