its funny cause im a guy in the exact same boat, and using vegetarian burgers as a meat substitute has been a fine transition to a healthier pattern. my personal favs are morningstar black bean burger and the asian veggie patty. i always make them into a burrito looking wrap using a whole grain tortilla with some shredded cheese and pico de gallo with a decent dash of cayenne sauce and some mayo (not the healthiest additions but what the hell). takes about twenty minutes in all and about three to five minutes to down. try it out, its pretty tasty. i also douse it with a little olive oil too and maybe some melted butter.

I know it's been a while since your post but another good meat-free product is Meredith Farms Charbroiled Veggie Burgers. They are microwaveable and taste like meatloaf. I'm picky and a bad cook but found these to be a great option. The Boca brand chili is also really good.

nice article. I've just started vegetarianism and also consider myself a "soft-core" veggie. After reading your article, I'm going to pick up some Boca products for when my meat cravings kick in.

I'm a fan of both Boca burgers and Morningstar bean-burgers. The Morningstar burgers are more interesting but they fall apart easily because of the intact beans. I like regular meat burgers as well but the saturated fat is a real killer.

Schneiders makes some of the most delicious meatless imitation chicken products I've been able to find, but their burgers are atrocious. I can't find any burger that I like, I may have to give them up. But I'll see if I can hunt down Boca, a man's positive review of it gives me hope.

Meredith,
Oh how funny...I actually kind of like the Morningstar sausage links....I guess different strokes for different folks strikes again!
Thanks for the food advice. I'm more of a part time vegetarian...trying my best to cut down on red meat these days by using equivalent substitutes..anything similar to fool my taste buds will work.

Hey there, I have been a true vegetarian for many years and we always keep Veggie Burgers where I grew up in my parents house (even though all my family is not vegetarian). Not only is it faster and convenient, like you said they are pretty fair substitutes. Personally, I am not a huge burger fan, so I might not be the best authority on this, but it seems like you find Boca a tiny bit lacking. I personally am much more a fan of Morningstar brand - their Chick'n griller makes a delicious chicken sandwich. They also have recently come out with some really delicious new varieties, try the Asian Veggie Patties sometime. Delicious, tastes just like an eggroll. I have also been told that the Morningstar brand cheddar burgers are really delicious, by a meat-loving carnivore. It is like a burger with little pockets of cheese in the middle of the burger. I also personally like the Spicy Black Bean Burger because it has some more flavors and spice but if you don't like the vegetable taste it might not be the best one for you. I do know a number of meat-lovers who like that one also, it's worth trying out.
Well I hope I helped you, I might also suggest that if you want to try the Morningstar brand sausage patties (don't get the links, they're awful) and make a breakfast sandwich. Toast, a little cheese, one egg scrambled and a veggie patty. It's quick and easy in the morning but a little start for your "most important meal of the day." ;) Anyway give it a go and see what happens. You might find something you like better than Boca, well, like instead of tolerate. I hope things work out for you!! Hopefully I made one or two suggestions you might of found helpful.
