The other catch with the 0% balance transfer is that once it is transeferred any money you put towards your card goes towards that 0% transfer, making it harder to pay off any debt you obtained before transferring any other debt.

Free balance transfers are not really free if you don't pay them back on time every month. My current 0% balance transfer has been more and more difficult to maintain due to the increasing minimum monthly payments by my credit card issuer (Chase). I've heard similar things with Citibank and Bank of America but can't verify.

The shortened balance transfer periods from 12 months to just 6 months are making it harder for people like me to do debt consolidation properly. Increasing our monthly payment obligations make it even worse!
